Common Questions
What are your session rates?

Weekly treatment is highly encouraged & recommended in order to see the best results; however, sessions are also available biweekly (every other week). Do you accept insurance?
We are not in-network with any insurance companies. As out-of-network providers, we do not bill insurance; however, we can provide you with a superbill to submit if you have out-of-network benefits. Finding out if you have OON benefits is easy! Just give a call to your insurance company & ask if you have OON benefits for mental health care & explore what is covered. Many clients use their HSA to cover sessions costs.
Investing in your mental health after narcissistic abuse could not be more important. With intention, we serve only a limited number of clients a day. In order to keep our case-loads low (our key to providing the highest-quality care) & to avoid the limitations/restrictions previously placed on us by insurance companies, we must remain out-of-network. To remain accessible, half of Erika's session slots are sliding-scale. To inquire about the waitlist for lower fee services, please reach out.
Can you offer free consultations?
Due to the sensitive and legally complex nature of many narcissistic abuse cases, we are unable to offer free consultations. Ensuring a safe and structured space for disclosure requires proper documentation and an understanding of confidentiality limits, which is why consultations are included as part of our comprehensive intake appointments. Because even short conversations can involve information that is reportable, consults require the same care and structure as a full session. Additionally, we’ve found that 10–15 minutes is simply not enough time to assess therapeutic fit in a meaningful way. We appreciate your understanding.
If you are in crisis or immediate danger, we encourage you to seek urgent support. As a virtual practice, we are not a crisis response service and cannot provide same-day or emergency interventions. For immediate assistance, please consider the following resources:
• National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 (24/7)
• Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for confidential support
• Emergency Services: Call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room
How do I know if your services are right for me?
If you’re not sure if our services are right for you because you’re concerned your experience might not be “bad enough” to warrant specialized treatment– please know your experience is valid. We want to hear about it. We want to support you. This kind of distorted thinking is common & could be an effect of the antagonistic relational stress you’ve been experiencing. If there is another reason why you feel our services might not be right for you-- feel free to contact us to ask! Our practice mindfully screens to ensure all clients find the right therapeutic match.
I'm ready for therapy. How do I get scheduled?
Send us a message through our contact page! Our coordinator will answer any questions you have & help you get scheduled. We'll collect some information from you, send you some paperwork, and book your virtual session. Then you'll meet Erika!
Do you work with people who are narcissistic?
Yes. Erika Koch-Weser works with folks who are challenged by their own narcissistic traits or tendencies. We only ask that treatment is voluntary. If you identify with some narcissistic traits or the NPD diagnosis, this is a safe, judgement-free space to explore treatment options.
How can I pay for sessions?
Sessions are paid by credit card automatically after each session through our secure, electronic system.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your care will cost. This will be provided to you by Two Lights Therapy Center. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for healthcare services like psychotherapy. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call
P: 800-985-3059.
Do you offer both virtual and in-person therapy?
At this time, all of Erika's sessions are offered virtually.
What is your cancellation policy?
In order to provide the best care possible, we must uphold our cancellation policy. Sessions must be cancelled 48 hours in advance or you will be charged our full-rate session fee. This policy allows us to manage scheduling more effectively so we can better accommodate the needs of all of our clients. This also ensures that time slots are available for clients on our waiting list and for clients looking for last-minute appointments. Last minute cancellations limit our ability to offer support, and given the nature of the work we do (therapy for survivors of abuse), it is imperative we maintain a consistent and reliable schedule.
Do you ONLY see clients for narcissistic abuse recovery?
While our area of specialization (narcissism) is our focus, we are always open to hearing from anyone who is looking for therapy services. Explore the services listed on our website to see our other specialties. If we decide we are not the right fit for your case, we will always do our best to refer you to someone who can offer you excellent care. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
Therapy terms like “narcissist”, “gaslighting”, & “trauma-bonding” are more mainstream these days & I’ve heard people accuse others of “weaponizing therapy language”. Will you believe me when I share what I’ve been going through? Especially if I’m unsure if my partner or ex-partner is really narcissistic?
We will never deny your reality. Our time together in session is not spent diagnosing your partner (you are the client– they are not). Our treatment protocol is much more focused on examining, processing, and undoing any personal harm (to your self-esteem, identity, and mental health) caused by the antagonistic relational stress & conflict you’ve experienced. Educating & equipping you with the tools you need to expedite your healing journey is our main prerogative.
I’m not ready to leave my partner and may not want to leave at all. However, I’m worried my therapist will push me to exit the relationship or judge me for staying. Does your treatment take this into account?
Whether you stay or go is completely up to you. Encouraging you to leave your partner or cut someone out of your life is not a part of our agenda. You will be provided with psycho-education, tools, and prompts for reflection. This is a judgement-free space to learn & to discuss all of your options.
What if my partner or ex-partner really isn’t a narcissist though?
Narcissism is a spectrum, and if you are at the point of seeking out our services, it would be unusual for your concerns to lack all validity. If we conclude that narcissistic abuse is not occurring, we will likely be able to continue our work together to explore what factors are causing the distress in your life and relationships.
Sometimes, I worry that I might be a narcissist. What if I’m the problem?
Mirroring of narcissistic behaviors & tendencies is not unusual in these dynamics and is often an adaptive, protective measure. In fact, it is so common that it has a name: reactive abuse. Any anger you are experiencing is understandable & likely justified. Together, we can find healthier ways to stay safe and to cope with any feelings that are showing up.
Do you only see clients from Chicago?
While we are based in Chicago, we work with clients from all across the city and suburbs. Many of the clients we serve are from areas in the city like Lincoln Park, West Loop, Lakeview, Old Town, and Gold Coast, but we also see clients from places like Hinsdale, Winnetka, Lake Forest, Burr Ridge, Northfield, Oakbrook, Western Springs, and Naperville. The great news is, since our services are virtual, we can work with anyone located in the state of Illinois.
