EMDR THERAPY FOR NARCISSISTIC ABUSE TRAUMA IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Wholeness Beyond Their Harm
You’ve watched all the videos, you’ve read all the books, you know the patterns, & you may have even left the relationship—but you still feel stuck. EMDR can help you go deeper, even breaking trauma bonds. EMDR therapy can be an effective tool to process trauma from narcissistic abuse or trauma caused by any type of emotionally abusive relationship. If you’re experiencing flashbacks, self-doubt, and trauma responses after a relationship with a narcissistic partner, parent, or friend, Eye Motion Desensitization and Reprocessing can help some people reprocess those memories. Through rhythmic eye movements, EMDR helps your nervous system integrate unprocessed trauma so you can move forward feeling whole and balanced.

ENSURING AN ETHICAL APPROACH WITH EMDR
Things your EMDR therapist wants you to know about treating narcissistic abuse trauma:
EMDR can be life-changing, but it takes time to build the trust and regulation needed for deep trauma processing.
Two Lights Therapy Center does not offer EMDR as a standalone treatment option and instead integrates this modality as one of many tools.
Two Lights Therapy Center uses attachment-focused EMDR with IFS-informed components (Internal Family Systems/parts work).
EMDR therapy is not the right fit for every client, and that's okay—therapy should look different for everyone.

What is EMDR in Therapy?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR incorporates bilateral stimulation (through guided eye movements) while clients recall distressing beliefs & experiences. This process is thought to help the brain access adaptive memory networks and shift how traumatic memories are stored, reducing emotional intensity over time. Though the precise mechanisms of EMDR are still under investigation, current theories suggest it may support integration by stimulating both hemispheres of the brain and engaging the nervous system in a state of dual attention. Studies show that EMDR therapy is especially helpful for survivors of trauma and can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD.

Because EMDR is fundamentally different from talk therapy, the process can feel unfamiliar at first. Rather than analyzing experiences through conversation, EMDR invites you to notice what arises internally & somatically—sensations, emotions, memories—as the brain does its own integrative work. Sessions involve much longer periods of quiet reflection and fewer words. For clients used to more cognitive or insight-based approaches, this can take some getting used to. Over time, many find that EMDR helps shift not just what they think about their past, but how they feel in their body when recalling it.
